Classes in Battlefield 3 multiplayer: Support (part 2 of 5)

In the first post of this series, I described the advantage of choosing one or two classes to focus on in the early weeks of BF3’s release.

In this section, I’ll go into the unique features of the Support class and what type of players will benefit from starting with this role.

Unlike other roles, the support class has the option to use light machine guns. LMG’s are capable of laying down heavy fire for extended periods of time with their large ammo feeds.

Bipods and suppressive fire

Two new features debut in Battlefield 3, giving the support role some unique advantages. Bipods can be used anywhere while in the prone position, or while standing or crouched if the player is up against an object such as a crate. The bipod improves accuracy and reduces recoil, and unlike in previous Battlefield games, we’re told allows LMG’s to be fired continuously while maintaining accuracy.

Suppressive fire is another new addition to the Battlefield series. Typically, providing covering fire was not very effective in this series of games. With this new feature, shots fired near an enemy will blur their vision and affect their aim. Firing upon an enemy behind cover, such as sandbags, can put them at a disadvantage if they leave their cover. This can allow a support player to provide covering fire for teammates to move out in the open.

The support role is also expected to have the ability to put down ammo packs. This can be very useful when working closely with teammates. It allows not only ammo to be replenished, but special items such as grenades and anti-tank mines.

What players should focus on the support role?

The support class is most effective when working closely with a squad. While its heavy weapons are very capable at killing enemies and allowing a single player to have an impact on the round, the ammo packs and suppressive fire benefit the team as a whole.

Players who like working in close proximity to squad members towards capturing or defending objectives are best suited to the support class.
